An all-star line-up for the opening concert of the Gewandhausorchester's Shostakovich Festival 2025: Daniil Trifonov joins the orchestra and Gewandhauskapellmeister Andris Nelsons for an all-Shostakovich programme focused on two contrasting works. The Festive Overture provides a suitably rousing curtain-raiser before Trifonov performs the Second Piano Concerto, written as a 19th-birthday present for Shostakovich's piano student son, Maxim. The concert's second half is taken up by the mighty Fourth Symphony. Inspired by Mahler's grand symphonies and composed on a huge scale – both formally and emotionally – the work was withdrawn before its originally planned premiere in 1936 and was first heard only 25 years later.
