The musical ideas for Sibelius's sixth and penultimate symphony had accompanied the composer for almost a decade before he finished the work in 1923, and the luminous, nature-inspired score seems to reflect that long gestation – in its organic structure and the sense of inevitability and rootedness of its musical material. And few orchestras are better placed to capture the work's special character than the Helsinki Philharmonic – which premiered it in 1923. Here, a century later, they return to the work with Jukka-Pekka Saraste as part of a complete cycle of Sibelius's symphonies.
